Is Email Encryption A Good Idea?

While email encryption is now a good and effective way to keep your personal information safe, it has its drawbacks as well. If you want to protect your business secrets from criminals or snoops, it might be a good idea to move on to some other more secure means of email encryption.

There are two communication tools which are widely used today: email and instant messaging. Both have been around for several years and are being used by more people every day. They both come with different pros and cons, so when deciding which to use you should always take the long view.

The first thing to remember about email encryption is that the people using it are never alone. They usually talk in person, rather than by phone or internet messenger. The number of people that know each other can be pretty low.

Also, even if there is a server involved, which is always open to everyone (and maybe even to spies), you would still have to physically go to the server to get your messages decrypted. When you consider all of the dangers of electronic snooping, this is not a very practical solution.

While it is relatively easy to block private information online, when it comes to emails it is a little more difficult. It takes a lot of effort to keep the server free of all electronic trails and send everyone an “all clear” email when you get hacked.

This is the good thing. You can encrypt your email and also run a personal copy on a private server.

There are two ways to do this. You can use some type of software to encrypt the files on your computer or connect your private server to a public internet connection. Both have their pros and cons.

Some companies have software which comes as an all in one system, providing you with encryption and decryption of files. You should make sure that the software you are using does not end up logging and transmitting your personal data. For instance, if your computer is connected to the internet, every time you make any changes to the files they are immediately relayed back to the company.

You could also use spyware. Spyware is a type of spyware that monitors your computer and sends information to the company. It is not really a good idea to install spyware on your computer if you are going to use it for email encryption.

In fact, there are a few programs which provide excellent security for both your computer and the data you are sending. These include some of the best freeware and shareware available on the Internet. I strongly recommend using these.

If you are using a website as an email address, your chances of having someone get into your computer and steal your emails are much higher. Most sites will require that you enter your password when logging in, but it is not nearly as secure as email encryption. Some will allow you to encrypt your email account.

Your email encryption and decryption server are probably the most important aspect of using it, but if you keep it secure you can ensure that you are not affected by many of the problems associated with email. These problems include identity theft, email scams, and more.
